Living and staying in Mainz

Information about Mainz

Mainz, the state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate with 197,000 inhabitants, has an impressive history which is over 2000 years old. Tradition and progress are reflected here in everyday life.

Located at the centre of the Rhine-Main region, Mainz stands for cosmopolitanism and sociability, features which you can experience especially at carnival time. Of course, the fact that Mainz is also an industrial location (IBM and Schott Glaswerke) and a centre for media (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen, SAT 1, Südwestrundfunk) plays an important role.

Mainz is twinned with Dijon (France), Watford (England), Zagreb (Croatia), Valencia (Spain), Haifa (Israel), Erfurt (Thüringen) and Louisville (Kentucky, USA).

Further information about events in Mainz can be obtained at the Touristik Centrale, Rathaus-Brückenturm, 55116 Mainz or on the Internet.

Cost of living

At present, you should reckon with approximately 600 Euros per month. The larger part of this monthly amount will be spent on rent, which is between 200 Euros and 250 Euros for a single room at the halls of residence of the Studierendenwerk. The costs of your personal lifestyle naturally depend on your own requirements.

The University of Applied Sciences Mainz has a Mensa (student restaurant), which is open from 9 am to 16 pm during the lecture period. A meal costs between 2 and 4 Euros.

Leisure time and sports activities

Leisure time and sports activities offered by the Johannes-Gutenberg University can be used by all students of the University of Applied Sciences. The offer ranging from A for Aikido to Y for Yoga covers health and popular sports as well as competitive sports activities.

In addition to this there are a large number of sports and other clubs you can join. You are certain to find something to your liking. It should not be difficult for everyone to find the right kind of leisure time activity, unless you just can’t make up your mind.

Halls of residence for students

The rooms at the halls of residence in Mainz are rented out by the Studierendenwerk Mainz. The Studierendenwerk will also assist you in finding private accommodation.

Should you wish to live in one of the halls of residence, you must apply for this directly at the Studierendenwerk Mainz.

You generally have the option to live in all kinds of accommodation. As there are not enough rooms available, you should state several residential houses and types of accommodation according to priority in the category “accommodation” on the application form (for instance Lee Barracks 1. Inter I 2. Weisenau 3. etc.). The Studierendenwerk will endeavour to fulfil your wishes, but hopes you understand that due to the number of requests not all students will be able to get their desired accommodation. If you are staying at a hall of residence, please bring your own covers, pillows and crockery with you.

Please read the explanations on the back of the application form. Your signed application is to be sent together with two identical recent photographs stating the respective member of staff responsible at the Studierendenwerk (see contact persons) by mail to

Studierendenwerk Mainz
Wohnraumverwaltung
Staudinger Weg 21
55128 Mainz
Germany

Please return the application form by 15th July (for the winter semester) and by 15th January (for the summer semester) to the Studierendenwerk.

The order of receipt of the applications at the Studierendenwerk Mainz will be decisive for allocating the rooms (the sooner you apply, the likelier you will get the room you wish).

You will then receive a tenancy agreement from the Studierendenwerk, usually by email. This agreement must be signed and returned to the Studierendenwerk. This tenancy agreement is binding.
