Innovative, international, individual: The School of Business at the University of Applied Sciences Mainz
Master student Louisa Flocke is doing her internship in New York. Dr. Ralf Dahm, Director of Scientific Management at the Mainz Institute of Molecular Biology, is doing his Master in Business Administration for Non-Economists. Helgard Frey, reigning Rhine-Hessian wine queen, is currently doing her Bachelor in Business Administration. Felix Wagner, also a Business Administration Bachelor student and already owner of International Renewable Energy Systems (IRES) Asia Pacific in Melbourne, is going to Australia for one semester. Business Law student Lydia Butzlaff is the German Student Champion in Taekwondo for the third time. ZDF cameraman Achim Voss is studying Media, Management & IT as a dual study programme. Six students, six different lives, but all have one common feature: The School of Business at the University of Applied Sciences Mainz.
The University of Applied Sciences Mainz has that certain something which makes studying here special: Small manageable group sizes, a very strong practical orientation, over 50 partnerships with universities all over the world, innovative study programmes, individual support and a modern campus in a student city worth living in – these are our plus points.
Studying here means:
- Small learning groups: On average 30 persons take part in each course. During “lectures” it is possible to ask questions, in seminars and project groups with 20 participants the dialogue between students and teachers is the main focus.
- Teamwork: work together, work on tasks and case studies, solve problems instead of teacher-centred lectures.
Practice orientation: teachers from international top-class companies
- We concentrate on the essentials with regard to theory and put the main focus on practical application in companies.
- In almost all modules, lectures by professors are complemented by guest lecturers with practical expertise.
- A good 15 % of the lectures and seminars are held by external teachers with a practical work background.
- The professors of the school have their own management experience in international top-class companies (for example Boehringer, McKinsey, PricewaterhouseCoopers, SAP, Schott, TRUMPF).
- Even after their appointment the professors remain up-to-date on new developments in business practice. They are respected partners in law firms, tax consulting and auditing and as consultants to companies and the government.
Research projects: Students are involved
- Research carried out by the professors is orientated on practical applicability in close cooperation with companies. Instead of a long list of publications, we increase the company performance of our customers. The integration of students in these research projects is a matter of course for us.
- Individual guidance: Final papers, especially the master’s thesis, are written under the individual guidance of a professor, normally in cooperation with a representative from the company. This close collaboration guarantees a high level of success in the final papers. Among the large companies that cooperate with us helping students write papers for their bachelor’s and master’s degrees as well as for a diploma are: BMW, Opel, Clariant, Fraport, Citibank, Lufthansa, IBM. Not to forget the many dedicated medium-sized businesses which often have more to offer to students than large companies.
- Individual guidance: assistance in planning a study programme and recognition of examinations.
Courses in Business Planning for tomorrow’s business economists
- Institutional framework for cooperation: The IUH and the BIS Institute. About 400 cooperating companies work together with the School systematically and support teaching in Business Administration, Business Law and Business Informatics.
- Every semester, the IUH offers students courses in Business Planning and supports their first steps towards independence.
- Innovative approaches: The first study programme in Business Law in Germany, unique approach to study Business Informatics on a job training-study basis (awis), the study programmes in International Business focus primarily on international cooperation.
- Internationality: Exchange programmes in Europe, USA, Australia, Asia and Latin America. Integrated exchange study programme in the fifth semester of the bachelor study programme and the third semester of the master study programme.
Transatlantic Master in South Carolina
- Two first-class master study programmes in International Business with the possibility of achieving two degrees, for example a Transatlantic Master in four semesters with a MA International Business and the (AACSB-accredited) MBA from the Coastal Carolina University or including an integrated work internship in North Carolina.
- Membership in CIDD, the world’s largest consortium for double diplomas for universities of applied sciences guarantees involvement in the latest developments in international exchange.
Frictionless linking of studies and career
- Internationality, also for working students: crash courses of two to three weeks in Great Britain (Business English), the USA (Doing Business in the United States) und in China (Opportunities in the Chinese market) enable our part-time students to combine employment and international experience with their studies in Mainz. Excursions in the MBA programme also for students without an economics background to South Africa, Korea, Thailand, and Latin America are an integral part of the study experience. This model is exemplary for adult further education.
- Work-study programme: Not just a part-time study programme but also genuine cooperation with the students’ employers. This ensures frictionless linking of studies and career.
